Renault has updated its Renault 5 electric mini car with aerodynamic, technical and interior upgrades. The range of the 150 HP, 52 kWsa “Comfort Range” version has increased from 410 kilometers to 430 kilometers, while the range of the 120 HP, 40 kWsa “Urban Range” version has risen from 312 kilometers to 315 kilometers.
In the entry-level “Five” version, the 95 HP motor has been replaced by a 110 HP motor. The new 36.5 kWsa LFP battery offers a range of 305 kilometers, while the car can accelerate from 0 to 50 km/h in 3.5 seconds and supports 80 kW DC fast charging. In the cabin, Gemini has replaced Google Voice Assistant, while a wireless charging unit that prevents overheating and “Smart Driving Mode” have been added. The new Renault 5 will be showcased at the Paris Motor Show in October.
Why it matters
The update repositions not only the appearance of the Renault 5 but also its technical options tailored to different usage needs. In particular, the changes to the motor, battery and fast-charging capabilities of the entry-level Five version raise questions about what kind of usage profile this option will offer compared with the previous model. The varying range increases across the versions highlight the differences in battery capacity, performance and charging support when making a choice. Gemini, the wireless charging unit that prevents overheating and Smart Driving Mode also show that the update extends to the in-cabin user experience. However, pricing, the sales schedule and the markets in which the versions will be offered are not yet clear.
