Uber will lay off 3 thousand 300 employees, equivalent to approximately 10% of its global workforce, in an effort to simplify its organizational structure and speed up decision-making processes. According to an email sent to employees by CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, management positions will also be reduced by 20%.
As part of the restructuring, some managers will move into operational roles, the number of employees more than 7 levels below the CEO will be reduced, and micro-teams consisting of 1 or 2 people will be cut by 50%. The engineering, science and delivery units, as well as the restaurant, retail and direct delivery operations, will be combined under more integrated structures.
Why it matters
The focus of the decision is not only on reducing the number of employees but also on rebuilding Uber’s management and team structure. Thinning out management layers points to a way of working in which authority and responsibilities in decision-making processes will be concentrated across fewer levels; the move of some managers into operational roles also shows that this change will directly affect job descriptions. The consolidation of the engineering, science and delivery units, along with the restaurant, retail and direct delivery units, will require different activities to be managed under more unified structures. The open question for employees, therefore, is how the layoffs and consolidations will affect daily workflows, the division of responsibilities among teams and decision-making responsibilities.
