The independent project developed for PC and aiming to bring The Last of Us Part 2 universe to a PvP multiplayer mode has been canceled at the request of Sony Interactive Entertainment. The developer known as “Speclizer” announced that the mod, which had been in development since January and was planned for release this month, would not be published.
The project, for which a 25-minute gameplay video was shared in June, was collecting support through Patreon. The decision became a second disappointment for fans awaiting a multiplayer production in the series, following Naughty Dog’s cancellation of The Last of Us Online in late 2023.
Why it matters
The decision shows that not only a single game on the series’ multiplayer side but also options developed by fans through different channels are subject to Sony’s approval. This directly concerns not only those awaiting the project but also supporters who contributed through Patreon. The lack of an accessible version despite the gameplay footage published in June also highlights the difference between shared content and a completed product. Thus, the key question facing fans is whether the series’ multiplayer experience will take shape through independent efforts or an official production; the available information does not offer a definitive option on this matter.
