A Rooftop Camper for Vehicles Without Roofs
Modified camping motorcycle

Honda Goldwing is known not only for its reliability and comfort, but also for being one of the motorcycles on which new technologies were first used. By adding a metal frame and a lightweight shell to his Goldwing, which he had previously modified for off-road climbing, Matt created a small camper in which he could sleep.

The vehicle overturned several times during test rides because the motorcycle’s center of gravity had been raised. In one of the falls, the wiring harness was damaged, and the battery ran out overnight.

Why it matters

This project shows the extent to which the intended use of a motorcycle identified with comfort and reliability can change through the addition of an extensive body structure. The goal of making it suitable for off-road use and providing the ability to sleep inside transforms the motorcycle from a vehicle used solely for riding into a setup that combines transport and shelter functions. However, the upper structure’s effect on the center of gravity reveals that such modifications directly affect riding stability. Damage to the wiring harness and the battery running out also show that the project can create new problems not only in terms of physical balance but also for the electrical system. The open question is how usable this design is in the face of repeated falls and technical failures.
