Man Who Created AI-Generated Crocodile Image as a Joke Faces Up to 10 Years in Prison
Pondside with yellow warning tape

A 30-year-old Myanmar national, Ye Lin, created a fake crocodile image made to look as though it had been taken at Singapore’s Pandan Pond and sent it to just one friend. After the image spread online, authorities closed off the area and launched a two-day search for the crocodile, which was believed to be real; water activities at the pond were also canceled. When no crocodile was found, it became clear that the image had been generated using artificial intelligence, and the pond was reopened. After becoming aware of the investigation, Ye Lin deleted the image and his Gemini history. The charge of “transmitting a misleading message” carries up to 3 years in prison and a fine of 10 thousand dollars, while the charge of “obstructing justice” carries up to 7 years in prison. Ye Lin faces up to 10 years in prison in total.

Why it matters

The incident shows that a single image created using artificial intelligence can cause more than an online misunderstanding: it can also affect public officials’ time and the plans of pond users. The fact that the image was sent to only one friend does not eliminate the consequences that can arise when content spreads beyond the sender’s control. The investigation resulting in charges indicates that misleading digital content and conduct affecting the course of justice can be assessed under separate legal headings. For this reason, the development concerns not only individuals who use artificial intelligence tools but also those who spread such content without verifying it. The key question that remains is under what circumstances users will incur legal liability if realistic-looking artificial intelligence images are circulated.
