Instagram Limited the Reach of AI Accounts That Do Not Use Labels
A digital face image on a phone screen

Instagram is making the “AI-generated profile” label mandatory for fake human profiles created with artificial intelligence. Content from accounts that do not use the label will not be shown in Explore, Reels or feed recommendations for people who do not follow them.

The rule covers only synthetic person accounts created entirely with artificial intelligence; real content creators’ use of AI to edit photos, text or graphics is excluded. Account owners who believe their accounts were mislabeled will be able to appeal. Enforcement covering all users will be expanded in the coming weeks.

Why it matters

The regulation directly affects not only the labeling of AI-generated synthetic person accounts but also their visibility on the platform. For this reason, the rule concerns account owners who manage such profiles as well as users who see content from Explore, Reels and feeds intended for people who do not follow the accounts. Excluding real content creators who use AI only in the production process shows that the policy is not a general ban on the use of artificial intelligence. How appeals against incorrect labeling will be evaluated and according to which criteria the reviews opened to all users will be conducted remain open questions that will determine the scope of the policy.
