Instagram has announced the First Draft feature, which automatically turns users’ raw videos and photos into videos with the help of artificial intelligence. For now, the tool is available only in the iOS app on iPhone devices; it identifies the highlights in footage selected for Reels and can automatically add popular music and transition effects.
Users can manually edit the music, clip durations and text in the generated draft. After the final adjustments, the content can be shared directly. The feature is expected to be integrated into different operating systems in the future.
Why it matters
The tool aims to reduce the workload before sharing by automating some of the editing steps involved in preparing Reels, such as selecting footage, matching music and adding transitions. Quickly creating drafts from raw footage is changing the way content is produced, particularly for users who want to complete the editing process within the app. At the same time, the fact that music, duration and text settings remain in the user’s control shows that the resulting video does not have to be an entirely automated output. Its initial availability only to iPhone users creates an access gap for users of other operating systems who want to benefit from the same functionality. When and to what extent the feature will come to different systems remains the key open question for now.
