Nvidia announced that the N1X, one of its Arm-based RTX Spark chips, will be available in laptops and mini PCs in October in two different configurations. Unlike the N1, which will not be released this year, the high-end version of the N1X features a Blackwell RTX GPU with 6144 cores, a Grace CPU with 20 cores, and 24GB-128GB of unified memory. This version will be used in high-end laptops as well as mini PCs such as Microsoft’s Surface RTX Spark Dev Box. The other laptop-focused N1X model features a Blackwell RTX GPU with 5120 cores, a Grace CPU with 18 cores, and 24GB-32GB of unified memory. Devices from Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, and MSI are expected to launch in October. Nvidia promises gaming performance of 100fps at 1440p resolution with ray tracing and DLSS enabled, but capabilities, exact availability, and pricing have not yet been announced. With the RAMageddon crisis continuing, the devices are expected to be very expensive.
Why it matters
N1X brings Nvidia’s effort to offer an Arm-based processor design alongside powerful graphics units in the same package to the laptop and mini PC market. This approach puts systems with unified memory, rather than a separate processor and graphics card setup, on the agenda particularly for users and developers who require substantial graphics power. While the two configurations indicate that the products will be positioned to meet different performance and hardware needs, the broad participation of device manufacturers shows that the solution will not be limited to a single brand. However, it is not yet clear under which real-world usage conditions Nvidia’s gaming performance claim applies or how much of a difference unified memory will make depending on the available capacity options. Since pricing and exact availability have not been announced, the question of accessibility also remains open.
