Volvo has refreshed the 2028 XC40 while retaining its form. The model features new LED headlights, a grille and a sculpted hood at the front, along with updated LED taillights at the rear. In addition to the standard 18-inch wheels, optional 19-inch and new 20-inch options are offered. While the optional 3D-enabled 360-degree camera makes maneuvering easier, the Door Opening Alert warns of cyclists or dangerous objects approaching from behind. Pilot Assist can also perform automatic lane changes.
The mild-hybrid-assisted 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces 247 horsepower and 366 Nm; an 8-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels. The driver-oriented 11.2-inch display inside includes the latest Volvo operating system and Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence assistant. Production will begin in the autumn months of this year; sales will start at the beginning of 2027, and the price has not been announced.

The refresh retains the XC40’s exterior appearance while highlighting the model’s safety and digital features that directly interact with users. This makes the development particularly relevant for drivers maneuvering in cities, encountering bicycle traffic and using driving assistance systems; however, the fact that the 360-degree camera and some wheel options are optional indicates that the equipment package may vary by version. The inclusion of Google Gemini together with the driver-oriented display and Volvo operating system shows that in-car functions are tied to software as much as to hardware. Although the production and sales schedule has been announced, the lack of a price leaves the model’s position in the market and which equipment will be standard unclear for now.
