A Fundamental Shift in the Electricity Grid

Data from the China National Energy Administration (NEA) show that, as of the end of July 2026, the country’s total installed solar power capacity had reached 1,286 gigawatts. This capacity surpassed coal-fired power plants, which stood at 1,285 gigawatts. The loss of the top spot by coal, which has been a core component of electricity generation infrastructure for more than a century, signals a fundamental shift in global energy markets. As of the end of July 2026, the capacity of solar panels accounted for 31.5% of China’s total installed capacity of 4.08 billion kilowatts.

Shares in Electricity Generation and Consumption

Although solar power has taken the top spot in installed capacity, its share of electricity generation and consumption is not at the same level because of its intermittent generation structure. In the first seven months of 2026, electricity generated from solar power reached 802.4 billion kilowatt-hours, an annual increase of 15.5%. This generation corresponded to 13% of China’s total electricity consumption. In other words, more than one of every eight kilowatt-hours of electricity used in the country came from solar power.

In the first half of 2026, coal’s share of total electricity generation fell below 50% for the first time.

Industrial Scale and the Global Supply Chain

China maintains its global leadership in the photovoltaic sector, producing approximately 80% of the world’s solar modules. Of the country’s total solar capacity of 1,286 gigawatts, 704 gigawatts come from large-scale centralized power plants, while 582 gigawatts comprise rooftop and distributed systems. China’s existing installed solar capacity exceeds the combined capacity of the United States, India and Germany, while also surpassing the total photovoltaic capacity of all European Union member states. Investments in the sector over the next five years are expected to exceed 2 trillion yuan (approximately 298 billion dollars).

Transition to Next-Generation Grid Infrastructure

More than 40% of the 193.97 million kilowatts of new capacity brought online in the first seven months of 2026 came from solar power. Efforts to modernize the grid have accelerated to ensure the compatibility of renewable energy sources with the grid and maintain security of supply.

As China continues to invest in next-generation power system infrastructure capable of integrating large amounts of wind and solar power into the system, the role of coal-fired power plants is also steadily shifting from continuous baseload generation toward grid balancing and the provision of backup power.
