Microsoft to triple data center capacity
An empty data center corridor

According to Bloomberg and Reuters, Microsoft plans to increase its global data center capacity from approximately 12 gigawatts to more than 38 gigawatts by 2032. While AI accelerators are present in roughly 2 gigawatts of the company’s current capacity, the goal is for AI hardware to account for approximately one-third of total capacity in 2032.

The expansion plan is being driven by the growing need for computing power in Azure and generative AI services, as well as insufficient existing capacity. Microsoft projects 50 billion dollars in capital expenditures for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027.

Why it matters

The plan shows that Microsoft is rescaling its AI services not only on the software side but also in terms of data center and accelerator hardware capacity. The growing share of AI hardware in total capacity means that computing power in Azure and generative AI services will become more central to the company’s infrastructure planning. The fact that insufficient existing capacity is among the reasons for the expansion reveals that infrastructure bottlenecks, as well as rising demand, are influencing decisions. Capital expenditures on this scale leave open how Microsoft will allocate its resources between data centers and AI hardware, and to what extent the planned capacity will meet the computing power needs of its services.
