Nvidia announced in June that it had reached agreements with Microsoft and other PC makers to develop Windows PCs with AI and agent capabilities based on the RTX Spark chip, but it shared no details. On Wednesday, Microsoft revealed the specifications and pricing of the new Surface Laptop Ultra at an event held as part of Tech Week in San Francisco.
The device comes in two base models: one starts at $2,600, while the model with the more powerful chip starts at $3,700. With memory and storage options, the price goes up to $5,900; Microsoft said the top-tier model is already sold out. The company also unveiled the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box workstation, which starts at $6,000. This device comes with the following developer tools installed:

- PowerShell 7
Both devices are designed to run AI models locally on the device for free, and to that end they include hardware changes such as the CPU, GPU, unified memory, and advanced cooling. The devices run a refreshed version of Windows 11 that includes an “Execution Containers” feature, which makes it easier to sandbox AI agents. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said this feature will be made available to all Windows 11 users. Nadella said that over the past 3-4 years they realized that simply having a model was not enough; that orchestration and memory beyond the model were needed, that they had built a layer combining multiple models with context, memory, and action space, and that they were opening it up to everyone’s agents.
Microsoft, which is targeting developers, is offering a discount of up to $1,000 to those who trade in a MacBook Pro. The company promises that the devices are also suitable for content creation, video editing, and gaming.
Dell also announced details of the XPS 16 Creator Edition on the same day; the device is available for pre-order at Best Buy for $3,800 and will be delivered at the end of October.
