BMW Prepares to Say Goodbye to i4: Coupe and Convertible Models to Replace It

BMW is preparing to end i4 production by the first quarter of 2027 at the latest, depending on the market. The new i3 will technically be the successor to the i4; however, instead of a direct Gran Coupe successor, the company will develop all-electric coupe and convertible models.

Testing of the all-electric convertible model, which will use the Neue Klasse architecture, has been spotted in Germany. BMW also plans to launch the all-electric i3 Touring around the middle of 2027.

Why it matters

This change shows that BMW is moving toward different body types in its electric lineup instead of a single Gran Coupe line. Positioning the i3 as the technical successor to the i4 means that the model naming and product family will be reorganized. The use of the Neue Klasse architecture in coupe, convertible and Touring models indicates that options catering to different usage needs on the same technical foundation will come to the fore. However, since the timing of the i4’s end may vary by market, it remains unclear whether the transition will take place at the same pace in all countries; it is also not yet clear to what extent the new coupe and convertible models will fill the i4’s position in Gran Coupe form.
