School orientation begins tomorrow
A sunny primary school classroom

The Okula Uyum Week will last 5 days for preschool and 1st-grade students and 3 days for middle school 5th-grade students; the program will begin tomorrow and continue through 11 September. Play-based modules to be implemented every month throughout the academic year will also include out-of-school learning environments through school-family cooperation. The guide includes an implementation schedule, responsibilities, points to consider, and examples of games and activities. The objectives include family participation, adjustment to school and friends, becoming familiar with school environments, developing a sense of belonging, expressing needs, and assuming responsibility. Public-sector employee parents who request it will be deemed to be on administrative leave for up to 3 hours, in accordance with class hours. The first term will begin on 14 September Monday (Pazartesi).

Why it matters

The regulation aims to prepare children who are starting school for the first time or moving to a new level not only for the class routine but also for the social environment and the school’s daily functioning. Establishing the process on a play-based structure spread throughout the year is important to ensure that adjustment is not limited to a few days of introductory activities. The participation of families in out-of-school learning environments, as well as children’s expression of their needs and development of a sense of responsibility, makes parents, alongside teachers, direct parts of the process. The leave provided to public-sector employee parents aims to reduce administrative obstacles to family participation during the initial period. The open question, however, is how the common framework in the guide will be implemented in different schools and according to children’s different needs.
