Ukraine, which has suffered heavy losses in the invasion operation launched by Russia in February 2022, is facing growing problems with military recruitment. Heorhiy Mazuraşu, the 55-year-old lawmaker who left the Halkın Hizmetkarı Partisi in 2024, criticized the detention of candidates and their forced placement on buses, as well as the inability of exhausted soldiers to leave their posts in order to preserve troop numbers, in an interview published on his YouTube channel on Wednesday. Saying that these practices make the country look like a “rapist nation,” Mazuraşu called for voluntary recruitment supported by better conditions, higher pay and strong social protections. In Ukraine, men aged 25 to 60 can be conscripted through mobilization. As the war approaches its 5th year, the possibility of a new mobilization by the Kremlin is being debated; Dmitriy Medvedev described Volodimir Zelenski’s claim as “nonsense.”
