Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning has been screened for the film press. A standalone sequel to the 2010 film The Social Network that can also be watched on its own, the film was described in first reactions as “a solid sequel,” “a tough assessment of Mark Zuckerberg,” and a harsh criticism of the current state of society, though some reservations were also voiced.
The first film was nominated for an Oscar in 8 categories and won three awards; Best Adapted Screenplay went to Sorkin. For the new film, Sorkin took over directing duties from David Fincher.
Rather than Facebook’s founding, the film focuses on the 2021 leak of the company’s internal documents. The cast includes:
- Mikey Madison, who won an Oscar for Anora, as whistleblower Frances Haugen
- Jeremy Allen White, who won an Emmy for The Bear, as Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz
- Jeremy Strong, taking over the role of Zuckerberg from Jesse Eisenberg
- Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, and Bill Burr also star
Critic Tom Chatalbash found Sorkin’s dialogue “razor-sharp” but found the direction flat and the pacing lifeless, summing up the film as “good but not great.” Awards Radar editor Joey Magidson wrote that the film is not a masterpiece but keeps interest alive from start to finish. Critic Manuel São Bento, meanwhile, stated that he found the film on the same level as The Social Network, even “more important.”
