Türkiye’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Ahmet Yıldız, said at a meeting of the UN General Assembly that they were concerned about the continued diplomatic deadlock and escalating tensions in the Russia-Ukraine war. Stating that the war had imposed a heavy toll on civilians and caused widespread destruction, Yıldız called for the resumption of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine and for the UN to assume a more active role in the process. Yıldız said that new rounds of negotiations could pave the way for peace and noted that Türkiye would continue working for a just and lasting peace based on international law and the UN Charter. Yıldız underscored the importance of protecting the welfare, identity, culture, language and rights of the Crimean Tatar Turks. He said Türkiye would maintain its position on Ukraine’s territorial integrity, which it has upheld since the occupation and illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014.
Why it matters
The statement shows that Türkiye wants not only the parties to return to the negotiating table over the war, but also the UN to assume a more active position in the negotiation process. This approach sets out the basic framework of Türkiye’s position by placing the emphasis on international law and the UN Charter alongside efforts to seek a diplomatic solution. The emphasis on the identity, culture, language and rights of the Crimean Tatar Turks shows that the consequences of the war and occupation for communities in the region constitute a separate area of concern for Türkiye. However, the question left open after the statement is under what conditions negotiations will resume and what role the UN could play in this process.
