AK Party Deputy Chairman and Head of Organization Ahmet Büyükgümüş said at a meeting held in Sivas that they had declared this year the “Year of Neighborhood Organizations.” Stating that they were working toward the goals of the Türkiye Century, Büyükgümüş said AK Party drew its strength from neighborhood organizations.
Describing the goal of a “Terror-Free Türkiye” as a necessity for unity and brotherhood, Büyükgümüş noted that the process was a state project being carried out under the supervision of the TBMM. Stating that PKK must lay down its arms and be dismantled along with all its extensions, Büyükgümüş said YPG in Syria had also announced that it was dismantling its presence.
Why it matters
The emphasis on neighborhood organizations reveals the party’s goal of making its political work more visible and organized at the local level; for this reason, the statement is significant, particularly for those monitoring the duties and priorities of party organizations. Defining the goal of a terror-free Türkiye within the framework of unity and brotherhood in the same speech shows that the issue is being addressed not only as a security matter but also as a political process. While defining the process as a state project and placing it under the supervision of the TBMM establishes the framework for how it will be conducted, it leaves open the question of how implementation will proceed. The statements regarding PKK and YPG, meanwhile, show that the objective is to end the organizations’ armed and institutional presence.
