The contents of the CXP102064 MechaCon chip used in the first large-bodied PlayStation 2 models have been read after approximately four years of reverse-engineering work. Researcher DiscoStarslayer stated in the process announced on September 13 that the chip was opened using chemical methods, the silicon data was examined under a microscope, and data was extracted through software thanks to the vulnerability found by Libby.

MechaCon handles the optical drive’s mechanical functions, as well as disc and certain file security processes. The work is significant for repairing older PS2 hardware, improving emulation accuracy, and understanding how the chip operates. However, the finding covers only a specific early MechaCon version; it does not establish whether it applies to PS2 Slim models or mean that game copies will run without additional processing.

Why it matters

The findings provide a usable reference for examining the operation of a previously closed-off component in early PlayStation 2 hardware. This is particularly significant for those concerned with resolving optical drive failures and keeping older devices operational. For emulator developers, it could contribute to more accurate modeling of the relationship between mechanical operations and disc and file security. However, because the information obtained is limited to a single early MechaCon version, it is unclear whether it can be directly applied to different hardware revisions; for the same reason, the scope of the finding regarding the use of game copies has not been established.
