The CXP102064 “MechaCon” chip, which manages the PlayStation 2’s optical drive and anti-piracy protection mechanisms, was reverse-engineered 26 years later. As a result of DiscoStarslayer’s four-year effort, a security vulnerability was found that allowed chip data to be extracted through software; Libby also contributed to the work.
The use of MechaCon in Namco’s System 246 and System 256, as well as Konami’s Python 1 arcade systems, in addition to the PS2, broadens the scope of the discovery. Documenting the chip could facilitate PS2 emulation and independent software development, while also paving the way for an advanced optical drive emulator.
Why it matters
The work makes it possible not only to understand the hardware of an old console but also to technically document different arcade systems that use the same chip. This could help preserve knowledge about MechaCon’s functions without limiting it to a single platform and facilitate independent software development efforts on these systems. In terms of PS2 emulation, it paves the way for more accurate modeling of the optical drive and anti-piracy mechanisms. However, it is not yet clear what tools the data obtained will be turned into or to what extent an advanced optical drive emulator will be feasible. The four-year effort also demonstrates the role of software-based data extraction methods in documenting old and closed hardware.
