Audi has initiated legal proceedings against Auto China to stop the parallel import into Germany of the E5 Sportback and E7X models developed for the Chinese market in partnership with SAIC. The vehicles, which carry the name “AUDI” instead of the four-ring logo, are not officially exported to Europe.
The company says that authorized European service centers will not be able to service these models and that problems may arise with software, diagnostics and spare parts. Auto China is reported to have removed the relevant models from its website.
Why it matters
This move shows that, when it comes to the use of vehicles designed for the Chinese market in Europe, the after-sales infrastructure is as decisive as the sales channel. For those considering acquiring the vehicle through a parallel channel, the key issue is under what conditions maintenance, fault diagnosis, software updates and access to parts will be provided after purchase. The lack of support from the authorized service network could create uncertainty for vehicle owners regarding warranty and technical intervention processes. The legal proceedings leave open the question of how the boundaries of responsibility for the brand, distribution and servicing of products specific to China will be drawn when they are brought to Europe.
