OSD’s data for the January-August period of 2026 showed a slowdown in automotive production. Total production fell 7% to 841 thousand 583 units, and to 854 thousand 860 units including tractors. Automobile production decreased 19% to 458 thousand 169 units. Commercial vehicle production rose 12%; this rate was recorded as 12% for light commercial vehicles and 7% for heavy commercial vehicles. Despite this, the domestic commercial vehicle market contracted 5%; the light commercial vehicle market declined 4%, while the heavy commercial vehicle market fell 7%. Exports decreased 12% to 597 thousand 594 units, while automobile exports declined 28% to 279 thousand 341 units. The total automotive market contracted 12% to 745 thousand 597 units, while the automobile market fell 14% to 564 thousand 241 units.

Why it matters

The data show that there is no one-way contraction in the automotive sector, but rather a clear divergence among product groups. The increase in commercial vehicle production despite declines in the domestic market for these vehicles and in total exports indicates that production and sales channels are not moving in the same direction. The sharper decline on the automobile side makes clear which segment affected the total market and export results. This picture brings the balance between the composition of demand and sales directed toward foreign markets to the forefront for manufacturers. However, since the data do not explain the reasons for the decline or whether it is temporary or permanent, the key question facing the sector remains open.
