Türkiye’s July unemployment data released
Resumé documents on a desk

According to TÜİK data, the number of unemployed people aged 15 and over in Türkiye rose by 150 thousand from the previous month in July, reaching 2 million 860 thousand. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased by 0.5 points to 8.1%; the rate was calculated at 6.8% for men and 10.6% for women.

The unemployment rate among those aged 15-24 rose by 1.5 points to 14.5%. According to TÜİK’s revision, the unemployment rate reached the lowest level of the year at 7.6% in June, while it stood at 8.1% in July.

Why it matters

The July data shows that the lowest level of unemployment seen in June could not be maintained in the labor market. The fact that the monthly increase was seen both in the overall rate and among young people indicates that the change was not limited to a single age group. The gap between the unemployment rates for women and men points to unemployment not being felt in the same way across social groups; this distinction provides a framework that should not be overlooked when assessing the overall rate. The revision of the June data means that monthly comparisons need to be considered not only with the latest published figure but also alongside the series updated by TÜİK. This makes it possible to read the July increase both in terms of the overall trend and the divergence between different groups.
