Türkiye Cumhuriyet Merkez Bankası (the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye) announced that the E9 Emission Group 9th issue 50 TL and 8th issue 5 TL banknotes entered circulation as of today. The signatures on the new banknotes will belong to Governor Dr. Fatih Karahan and, on the 50 TL banknote, Deputy Governor Dr. Gazi İshak Kara, and on the 5 TL banknote, Deputy Governor Prof. Dr. Fatma Özkul.

It was stated that the dimensions, design and general appearance of the banknotes are the same as those of the previous issues, and that the new issues will circulate alongside the existing banknotes.

Why it matters

The regulation shows that the difference users will encounter on the 5 TL and 50 TL banknotes will be limited mainly to the signature section; since their dimensions and appearance have not changed, the new issues will not be easily distinguishable from the existing banknotes. The circulation of the old and new issues together means that the previous banknotes in the market remain valid and does not require an exchange during use. The issue numbers and signatures will be distinguishing features for those wishing to track updates in the Central Bank’s banknote issuance. The announcement, however, provides no additional information on why this change was made or how it will affect the distribution of banknotes in the market.
