SpaceX is becoming a mobile operator
A communications tower and a smartphone

SpaceX has purchased low-frequency cellular licenses through a deal approved by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and is preparing to operate as a mobile carrier under the name Starlink Mobile. With an architecture that combines its satellite network with a terrestrial mobile network, the company will rival established carriers such as Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile.

The new licenses cover up to 14 megahertz of paired spectrum in the 800 MHz band; thanks to the advantage of low frequency, signals will be able to penetrate thick walls and building interiors. SpaceX had previously also purchased 2 GHz spectrum from EchoStar.

The FCC had also approved the deployment of 15,000 V2 Starlink Mobile satellites, which are said to offer more than 100 times the bandwidth of the current generation. With this architecture, SpaceX promises uninterrupted and reliable communication in homes, open areas, and “dead zones.”
