German company Isar Aerospace successfully reached low Earth orbit with its two-stage Spectrum rocket, launched from a spaceport in Norway. Founded by three university students in 2018, the company has thus become the firm to develop Europe’s first fully commercial launch vehicle to reach orbit. Isar raised approximately $1 billion in eight years and brought its workforce close to 500 employees. The achievement could intensify competition among commercial launch startups in Europe.

A large aircraft silhouette believed to be a mock-up of Aevum’s autonomous aircraft and launch vehicle Ravn X was seen at Long Beach Airport. The company’s founder, Jay Skylus, announced that Ravn X SN0 had conducted its first fully autonomous taxi test, which lasted approximately 37 minutes. The vehicle is not expected to fly anytime soon.

The United Kingdom government will provide £30 million ($40.5 million) in support for the SaxaVord Spaceport in Shetland. Its main user will be German company Rocket Factory Augsburg. Firefly Aerospace, meanwhile, has reached an agreement with SSC Space to launch two Alpha rockets from Sweden’s Esrange Space Center, no earlier than 2028.

Avio aims to increase the annual number of Vega-C rocket flights first to six and then to nine missions. However, the same solid-fuel rocket motors used in the Vega-C and Ariane 6 are creating a bottleneck in the supply chain.

U.S. company Stoke Space has received $1 billion in investment for the larger, fully reusable Block 2 model of its Nova rocket. Block 2 is planned to carry 15 metric tons to low Earth orbit and make its first flight in 2029.

Arianespace has reached an agreement for six additional Ariane 64 launches for Amazon Leo satellites. This brings the total number of missions to 24, with the flights planned to take place from French Guiana through 2031. The Exploration Company’s reusable Nyx capsule will also be launched with Ariane 6; the company received a service contract worth 760 million euros ($880 million) from the European Space Agency.

The Exploration Company has also raised $450 million in investment for the Storm engine and a reusable rocket capable of carrying 40 metric tons. Relativity Space’s Terran R rocket has been included in NASA’s Launch Services II program, which covers missions through December 2032.

Upcoming launches include O3b mPOWER 11, 12 and 13 on Falcon 9 on September 13, Sentinel-3C and Flex on Vega C on September 15, and Zhuque-2E on the same day.

Why it matters

In Europe, the commercial launch market is now being shaped not only by companies’ ability to develop rockets, but also by investments in launch sites, public support and long-term customer contracts. This structure makes access to financing, as well as launch infrastructure and a regular flow of missions, decisive for new ventures. Investments in reusable vehicles and plans for different payload capacities show that companies are building competition around mission volume as much as technical design. At the same time, the supply bottleneck in the engines jointly used by Vega-C and Ariane 6 leaves open the question of whether production capacity is keeping pace with the growing mission schedules. The level of competition in the European market will become clear based on the extent to which these technical constraints and planned launch schedules are met.
