Pakistan Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said that, under the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement signed on August 7 between Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, an attack against one of the parties would be considered an attack against all three countries. Asif said the agreement would come into effect if attacks by the Houthis in Yemen spread to Saudi Arabia and that Pakistan would fulfill its obligations.
The Houthis targeted an air base and oil infrastructure in Saudi Arabia the previous day, injuring 73 people in the attacks. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Seri also announced that Saudi warplanes had carried out 54 airstrikes on Yemen within 12 hours.

The agreement’s stipulation that an attack be considered directed at all parties turns the effects of Yemen-related actions within Saudi Arabia’s borders into a security issue concerning all three countries. This framework, together with the targeting of military and oil infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, shows that the conflict is not limited solely to the parties in Yemen.
