What contributions will the Türkiye-Saudi Arabia-Pakistan alliance make to the region?
Military command and control room

The repercussions of the Joint Defense Agreement signed by Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan in Mecca on August 7 continue. While the parties state that the agreement does not target any country and is defensive in nature, it is envisaged that a military attack against one of the three countries will be considered an attack against all of them.

Prince Turki al-Faisal, the former head of Saudi Arabia’s intelligence service, wrote that the agreement could contribute to the regional balance of power through the complementary geostrategic and military capabilities of the three countries. The analysis published in Arab News drew attention to the alliance’s potential to expand to other states with similar objectives, as well as to Saudi Arabia’s importance as a regional actor thanks to its strategic position, diplomatic relations and multifaceted partnerships.

Why it matters

The practical impact of the agreement emerges in regional calculations by turning the possibility of an attack against one of the parties into a common security issue for all three countries. The combination of the different geostrategic positions and military capabilities of Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan means that the cooperation is being assessed not only within the framework of bilateral relations but also as part of a broader regional balance. Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic relations and multifaceted partnerships stand out as a factor that could increase this structure’s connections across the region. However, it is not yet clear whether the agreement will be opened to other states with similar objectives or how its defense provisions will be implemented; this keeps fundamental questions about the alliance’s limits and regional impact on the agenda.
