Nissan is preparing to expand its electric model lineup in Europe with the new Pixo, which it aims to price at under 20 thousand euros. The fully electric city car is expected to share the same AmpR Small platform as the Renault Twingo E-Tech and to be produced at Renault’s Novo Mesto plant in Slovenia. The model, measuring approximately 3.8 meters in length, is planned to feature a 27.5 kWh LFP battery and a 60 kW electric motor. Pixo will compete with the Leapmotor T03 and BYD Dolphin Surf.
The Pixo name comes from the Suzuki Alto-based economy car produced in India and sold in the United Kingdom in 2009 for the equivalent of 7,030 euros. The model’s focus on low cost, with manual windows and a basic cabin, will be carried over to the electric market. Nissan’s early advantage gained with the Leaf, which went on sale in 2010, weakened as the model was renewed late, CHAdeMO declined in Europe and the product lineup grew slowly. The Renault alliance will enable cost sharing through a common platform and production. The next-generation electric Nissan Micra also shares the same foundation as the Renault 5 E-Tech. Twingo proportions, round headlights linked to the new Micra and details reminiscent of the Pike series can be seen in the prototypes.
Why it matters
This initiative points to an effort to rebuild Nissan’s weakening position in the electric car market after its early advantage, through a more accessible city car. The target of below 20 thousand euros is directly relevant to urban users in Europe, whose options are limited by the price of electric vehicles, as well as to competition in the small-car segment. Sharing architecture and production with Renault offers Nissan the opportunity to support its slowly expanding lineup with a lower-cost model by sharing development and manufacturing costs. However, it is not yet clear to what extent the vehicle’s price target and planned technical specifications will be retained, or how this approach will be positioned against the Leapmotor T03 and BYD Dolphin Surf.
