Microsoft is enabling a Windows 11 security feature that could negatively affect gaming performance
Illuminated gaming PC hardware

Microsoft is preparing to enable Windows 11’s memory integrity security feature on more devices next month. The kernel-level protection aims to block malware by allowing only trusted code and drivers to run. Windows quality updates will also enable Virtualization-Based Security (VBS) alongside memory integrity on eligible devices.

Microsoft program manager Peter Waxman said the move reflects the goal of making Windows more secure by design and through default settings. However, the feature can reduce gaming performance on some hardware. While the impact is more limited on modern processors, older processors may see a more noticeable loss in frame rates in certain games.

The feature will not be enabled automatically for users who previously turned it off. The setting can be checked by searching for “Core Isolation” in Windows. Microsoft recommends turning memory integrity back on after gaming if it is disabled for games.

Why it matters

This change means that, for more Windows 11 users, the trade-off between security and system performance will be reflected in the default settings. While kernel-level protection provides an additional barrier against malware, it raises the possibility of frame-rate losses, particularly for gamers using older processors. The more limited impact on modern hardware indicates that results will vary depending on the device’s technical specifications and the game being played. Although preserving the settings of those who previously disabled the feature leaves room for user choice, other users will need to assess the balance between improved security and performance themselves; the open question is which eligible devices will experience an impact and to what extent.
