Microsoft’s Project Zenith project offers developers a ‘distraction-free Windows experience’
A minimalist desk

Microsoft has named its distraction-free Windows experience for developers “Project Zenith.” The project is being developed for new developer devices with 64GB or more of unified memory. These devices will feature a preconfigured Windows installation and tools frequently used by developers, and will be able to run models with 30B+ parameters locally and without limits.

AMD unveiled the first Project Zenith device, a mini PC powered by Ryzen AI Halo chips, at IFA. Other devices with different hardware are expected to launch “in the coming months.” The devices will come with Visual Studio Code, GitHub Copilot, PowerToys, WinAppCLI and Windows Dev Skills preinstalled.

In File Explorer, file extensions, hidden files and the full path will be shown by default, and support for long paths will be enabled. Recently used files and folders, sync provider suggestions, Start menu recommendations and account notifications will be disabled. PowerToys Command Palette, meanwhile, will be enabled by default.

Microsoft said Project Zenith was created by listening to what developers expect from Windows and that it will continue to improve the platform as AI transforms software development.

Why it matters

Project Zenith means shaping Windows for AI-powered development workflows rather than making it a general-purpose operating system for developers. Simplifying the default settings and providing developer tools with the installation aim to reduce the time spent and the adjustments users have to make, particularly when setting up new devices. The ability to run models with 30B+ parameters locally could expand developers’ options for working without turning to cloud services; however, this experience is limited to devices with at least 64GB of unified memory. For this reason, the project’s impact will depend on the range of different hardware released after the first mini PC and when that hardware becomes available. It remains unclear which Windows versions Microsoft might apply this approach to.
