Despite a year having passed since the ceasefire with Hamas, the Israeli military is expanding its presence in Gazze. During a visit by The Wall Street Journal, extensive destruction was observed in the Şucaiyye Mahallesi in eastern Gazze city. The Israeli military has 32 military outposts in Gazze; according to satellite imagery, the fortified forward outposts are positioned on high ground, 1-5 kilometers from the Strip. Officials say the outposts defend the “yellow line” and that numerous buildings were demolished for their construction. Jake Godin of Bellingcat says this destruction is irreversible. While the US-mediated peace plan envisages Israel withdrawing behind 53 percent of Gazze, the military today effectively controls roughly two-thirds of the territory. According to the Health Ministry, more than 1400 people, at least 300 of them children, have been killed since the ceasefire began on October 10, 2025.
