Shaping the Future of Fashion Together with Google
Modern fashion studio with a digital tablet

Google’s Envisioning Studio, with support from Google Labs, developed two custom tools with designers Jane Wade and Sergio Hudson using Google Flow ahead of New York Fashion Week. The aim was to streamline the creative process by reducing the administrative work, factory logistics and supplier coordination that take up much of independent designers’ time.

The Styling Suite developed for Jane enabled her to combine hair, makeup, accessories, shoes and clothing on digital models. This allowed her to arrange looks virtually without producing physical samples and identify missing pieces. Casting and fitting processes can normally take a design team three full days.

Sergio’s Runway Visualization tool simulated the show venue with a limited studio budget. The designer could change the layout, lighting and set pieces using options that fit his budget, and adjust the routes models would walk to align the show with the audience experience. Previously, these changes required new 3D drawings for every design revision.

The results of the collaborations were seen on the New York Fashion Week runways. Google said users can create their own tools in Google Flow by describing them in natural language, without knowing how to code.

Why it matters

This collaboration aims to change the balance independent designers have to strike between creative decisions and administrative and operational burdens. Conducting preparations that require physical samples, new 3D drawings and large teams with virtual tools allows designers working with limited time and budgets to evaluate options earlier. Its impact on the industry is related not only to accelerating the workflows of two designers, but also to enabling users without coding knowledge to create their own tools using natural language. However, it remains unclear to what extent this approach can be applied to different design processes, at which stages of creative production the tools will be used permanently, and how much of the convenience they provide will carry over to physical production and procurement processes.
