Google Search embraces live NFL football
A smartphone screen in front of a stadium

Google has introduced a new Live Game Feed for NFL games. Those who tap the red “Live” icon in mobile search will be able to see a summary of the ongoing game, the live play-by-play, standout comments from social media, video footage and AI-powered insights. The feature is currently available on mobile in English; college games and support for more languages will arrive later this month. The carousel allows users to switch between the scores of other ongoing games. The statistics show player leaders, passing touchdowns, rushing yards, sacks, fumbles and yards after catch. By linking Yahoo Fantasy or Sleeper accounts to search, users can get AI-powered roster insights without uploading screenshots or entering data.

Why it matters

The feature brings the game experience together in a single place by allowing users who want to follow an NFL game to see scores, statistics, video and commentary within the search screen, rather than switching between different sources of information. For those tracking player performance, presenting leaderboards and game statistics in the same feed expands the way a game can be followed beyond the score alone. The Yahoo Fantasy and Sleeper integration also reduces the need for users in fantasy leagues to manually transfer the information required to assess their rosters. However, the fact that the service is currently limited to English and mobile use is the key factor determining who has access; the scope of the announced expansion to college games and additional languages remains unclear.
