When opened, this 14-inch laptop's screen reaches 17 inches
Detail of the expanding flexible display

Lenovo unveiled the ThinkBook Project Swan concept with a horizontally expandable display at IFA 2026. While the business-focused laptop initially looks like a conventional 14-inch model, its flexible OLED display expands into a 17-inch 16:9 screen. This approach is more understated and portable than the gaming laptop concept the company showed at CES, which expands from 16 inches to a 24-inch ultrawide display.

Project Swan is 0.7 inches / 17.9mm thick and weighs 3.5 pounds / 1.6kg. These figures make it slightly thicker and heavier than the average 14-inch laptop, but it remains small and light for a 17-inch device. The review noted that the product looked more like a finished product than a fragile prototype. Although rippling caused by the display’s expansion mechanism was noticeable, it was reportedly not prominent during use.

Placing the display and motor in the lid makes the lid heavier. This limits how far the screen can be tilted back, and it remains unclear whether the small hinge will withstand long-term use. Like the Project AeroBlade Concept, Project Swan is equipped with an Intel Lunar Lake chip. If Lenovo brings the device to market, it may use newer Intel processors. The project is expected to reach the market as part of the company’s range of foldable and rollable devices that balance form, durability and price.

Why it matters

Project Swan demonstrates a design approach aimed at reducing the trade-off between portability and a large workspace in laptops. It is particularly relevant to business users who need a compact device while on the move but a larger screen at their desk. However, housing the display and motor in the lid limits the device’s usable angle while also leaving an unresolved question about hinge durability. It is not yet clear whether the concept will go on sale, or, if it does, which processor it will use and at what price point it will be offered. Therefore, the product’s impact will depend not only on whether the screen can expand, but also on how Lenovo balances the durability and cost challenges of this mechanism.
