Acer unveiled a new concept gaming device called Project DualPlay Mini at IFA 2026. The Windows-based gaming handheld aims to bridge the gap between gaming laptops and Steam Deck-like portable computers.
In standard use, the DualPlay Mini has analog sticks, a D-pad and Xbox-style ABXY buttons on either side of its 8-inch display, along with two triggers on each upper edge. Thanks to its “flip-and-swivel” design, the device can be opened and the screen rotated, bringing it into alignment with the compact backlit mini keyboard. This setup could allow PC games that require keyboard input to be played on a handheld-sized device and enable users to carry a single device while traveling.
Acer did not share details about the DualPlay Mini’s hardware specifications, as it said there were no plans to bring the device to market. The system uses an Intel chip and features a dual-fan cooling design similar to the Predator Atlas 8. The cooling system has two fans, one metal and the other plastic; the metal fan’s blades are thinner than in the previous design. There are two USB-C ports on the rear, one of which supports Thunderbolt.
It remains unclear whether Acer will turn the device into an actual product. Data: Dominic Preston, September 2, 2026, 9:30 AM UTC.
Why it matters
The DualPlay Mini’s main distinction is that it integrates keyboard use into the device’s body, whereas portable gaming PCs typically require a separate peripheral for it. This approach brings the trade-off between portability and control options back into focus for PC games where a gamepad layout is insufficient; it is particularly relevant to users who want access to different game genres with a single device while traveling. However, Acer’s failure to announce sales plans prevents questions such as how durable, ergonomic, and capable this design would be in everyday use from being answered. Although the Intel chip, dual-fan cooling, and Thunderbolt-enabled USB-C connectivity indicate the device’s technical framework, its position relative to existing handheld gaming PCs cannot be assessed without detailed hardware information.
