A low mileage reading alone is not sufficient when buying a used vehicle; the vehicle’s overall condition should also be compared with its mileage. The main indicators of usage intensity are as follows:
- The steering wheel may show shine, smoothing, peeling and cracking. However, wear is also related to the vehicle’s age and the quality of the material.
- Rubber wear, thinning and smoothing on the brake, accelerator and clutch pedals should be assessed together with the mileage.
- Deformation and fading of the fabric or leather on the driver’s seat are important; age-related compression of the foam alone is not sufficient.
- On manual vehicles, fading and shine on the lettering of the gear knob, as well as wear on the handbrake lever and automatic gear selector, may indicate intensive use.
- Scratches and loss of coating on the door handles, window buttons and especially the driver’s door should be examined.
- Wear on the carpet beneath the floor mat and heel marks on the driver’s side can be assessed; the floor mat alone is not reliable.
- Dirt in the engine compartment, connection points, plastic parts and signs of maintenance should be considered together with service records. A visual inspection does not provide an exact mileage reading.

This framework shows that a used-car buyer should not regard a low mileage reading as a reliable measure on its own. When signs of use on the vehicle are assessed together with its age, material quality and maintenance history, inconsistencies between the stated mileage and the vehicle’s overall condition can be identified earlier. However, since visual signs of wear do not provide an exact mileage estimate, making a decision based on a single component alone can be misleading. Therefore, the key open question for the buyer is whether the observed wear stems from normal use and aging or from more intensive use than stated; service records stand out as one of the main elements supporting this assessment.
