Microsoft has begun testing several new console features with Xbox Insiders. Users will be able to try custom boot animations from the past, more customization for badges, local search, improved Remote Play, continuing downloads while playing from the cloud, and clearer voice chat.
The animations available for testing include the original Xbox One, Xbox One X, original Xbox Series X / S, and “we are Xbox” boot animations; the original Xbox and Xbox 360 options will not be offered. Local search will make it easier to find games and achievements in the extensive lists in My games & apps, official club achievement lists, and profile achievement history; it will work alongside the existing filtering and sorting options.
Remote Play for Xbox Series X / S will support 1440p resolution and higher bit rates. Xbox Cloud Gaming users will be able to allow downloads to continue in the background while streaming games; the system will automatically slow down downloads when necessary. Xbox Series X / S owners will also be able to try Voice Clarity, which reduces everyday background noise. The feature will be enabled by default in party chat and most games released since 2020.
Why it matters
The fact that the features are being tested through the Xbox Insiders program shows that they have not yet been made available to all users and that their final form will depend on feedback from the tests. The changes could make searching through extensive game and achievement lists easier, potentially speeding up everyday use particularly for users with a large amount of content. While the increase in resolution and bit rate on the Remote Play side aims to improve the viewing experience when accessing the console remotely, allowing downloads to continue during cloud gaming could reduce interruptions to the usage flow. The voice chat and boot screen options, meanwhile, address different needs ranging from accessibility to personalization. However, it is not yet clear which features will be retained after the testing process or when they will become available for general use.
