Comments on TikTok can be made by speaking

TikTok has announced new features to diversify its comments section. Users will be able to leave voice comments of up to 60 seconds under videos; this option will be rolled out gradually to those aged 18 and over within the next month. Content creators will be able to create polls with up to five options in the comments; the results will be viewable in the same section, and the feature has been rolled out globally. Support is also coming for sharing up to nine photos in a single comment and adding motion photos taken on a phone. While the new features will not be released simultaneously, photo sharing and voice comments will be rolled out gradually. Although voice comments could make it easier to speak instead of writing, a large number of recordings may need to be listened to individually.

Why it matters

These changes turn TikTok’s comments section from a place where only written reactions are shared into a more diverse interaction space where audio, visuals and polls can be used together. For content creators, polls provide an opportunity to gather viewers’ preferences directly in the comments section and monitor the results in the same place. While voice comments could make participation easier for adult users who prefer speaking to writing, having to listen to recordings one by one could make comments more difficult to follow. The features being rolled out at different times and gradually also means that users will not have simultaneous access to the same comment options; as a result, the experience may vary in the short term depending on age, region and an account’s place in the rollout.
