Introduction
Uber was fined 825 million euros (approximately 966 million dollars) by the Dutch Data Protection Authority for suspending or deactivating driver accounts using automated systems without sufficient human oversight or warning.
Developments
The company, which disagrees with the finding that it violated GDPR, said it would appeal the fine, stating that permanent deactivation decisions undergo human review and that drivers have the right to appeal.
The investigation is linked to an initiative launched by former Uber driver Brahim Ben Ali after his account was deactivated in 2019.
Details
Ben Ali had collected statements from 170 drivers who experienced similar problems.
