Qualcomm announced that it had renewed its global patent licensing agreement with Apple. According to the announcement dated 24 September, the new agreement will take effect on 1 April 2027. The financial terms, duration and patents covered were not disclosed.
The announcement concerns patent licensing; it does not contain information about which modem chip Apple will purchase in the future. As part of a settlement that ended lawsuits in 2019, the two companies entered into a six-year licensing agreement and a multi-year chip supply agreement, and also announced a two-year extension option.
Why it matters
The renewal shows that the patent-use relationship between the two companies continues beyond the settlement that ended the lawsuits in 2019; however, this legal framework does not mean that Apple will purchase modem chips from Qualcomm. This distinction demonstrates that a licensing agreement is not the same thing as technology supply, and that no conclusion can be drawn on its own about Apple’s hardware preferences. Since the financial terms, duration and patents covered by the agreement were not disclosed, it remains unclear to the public what rights and obligations the parties accepted.
