First Trailer Released for Artificial, a Film About OpenAI and Sam Altman [Video]
Cinema camera and modern meeting room

The first trailer for Artificial, which tells the story of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman being removed from his position in 2023 and returning a few days later, as well as the chaos within the company, has been released. Directed by Oscar nominee Luca Guadagnino, the film stars Andrew Garfield as Altman. Ike Barinholtz plays Elon Musk, Monica Barbaro plays Mira Murati, Yura Borisov plays Ilya Sutskever, and Mark Rylance plays Geoffrey Hinton. Amazon MGM withdrew from the film, which is planned for worldwide release, following a partnership with OpenAI and a $50 billion investment. After Netflix, A24 and Focus showed no interest, Neon acquired the rights in June 2026. The film will be released on December 25.

Why it matters

The significance of the production lies in making the leadership crisis within OpenAI a subject not only of the technology agenda but also of popular culture. This situation brings to the fore, more than the trailer itself, the question of how the film’s relationship with a real corporate crisis is presented. However, the distribution background provided for the film should also be examined separately in terms of the report’s reliability; council notes assess the information about a partnership between Amazon MGM and OpenAI and a $50 billion investment as unfounded and inaccurate. This contradiction makes it necessary to verify the account of why the film’s rights changed hands. Although the cast and release date have been reported, it remains unclear which sources the film bases its events on and to what extent they reflect actual developments.
