MSB issued a statement following the meeting held aboard TCG Anadolu off Aksaz as part of the Distinguished Observer Day of the Denizkurdu-I Exercise. It was stated that the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement provides a framework that strengthens joint capacity and deterrence through defense and security cooperation among member countries, and that activities are carried out through joint decisions and national processes.
The Ministry reported that military developments in Cyprus were being monitored, and that GKRY’s armament and military cooperation with third countries were adversely affecting the balance on the island. It was noted that claims that the air defense system in GKRY did not pose a direct threat could not disregard the security and rights of the Turkish Cypriot people. It was conveyed that, as a guarantor country, Türkiye would continue to take the necessary measures together with the TRNC.
It was stated that the demilitarized status of the Eastern Aegean Islands was established by the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne and the 1947 Paris Peace Treaties, and that Greece’s armament did not alter the legal situation. It was noted that Türkiye’s rights regarding the undersea cable between Greece, GKRY and Israel were protected by the Libya memorandum of understanding and the continental shelf boundaries notified to the United Nations on March 18, 2020.
