Greece is creating a broader operational area extending from the northern Aegean to the Eastern Mediterranean, and from the waters around Cyprus to energy and communications infrastructure, rather than limiting its defense planning to the Aegean islands. The approximately €3 billion air and missile defense agreement signed with Israel is being regarded as part of an integrated security architecture encompassing the navy, fighter jets, coastal defense and alliances.
Athens is addressing a possible conflict across the air, maritime, missile and cyber domains, as well as critical infrastructure. Projects such as the Crete-Cyprus electricity interconnection, the EastMed vision, the Alexandroupolis LNG infrastructure and the Bulgaria-Greece energy interconnection are considered elements of strategic resilience. This approach increases the risk of low-intensity tensions due to cable-laying activities, research vessels, energy projects, maritime jurisdiction areas and naval escorts. An all-out desire for war is not required for a conflict to break out; growing points of contact and activities could turn each tension into the beginning of a major crisis. Greece may seek to turn possible tactical successes into diplomatic advantages through its political weight within the EU, its defense relationship with France and its military cooperation with Israel.
