High school protests: "France's debt problem also threatens Europe"
An empty high school classroom

High school protests that began in France with demands for improved education conditions have spread to many cities. Due to the demonstrations, which were also joined by university students, academics, and unions, classes were partially or completely suspended at 891 schools across the country. According to the Interior Ministry, around 266 thousand people took to the streets, while protesters say the figure approached 450 thousand. More than 6 thousand 500 people have been detained since September 17. High school students are demanding urgent solutions to staff shortages, overcrowded classrooms, and neglected school buildings.

The protests also brought the country’s fiscal troubles to the fore. In France, where public debt exceeded 3.5 trillion euros in June, the Lecornu government is preparing a 54 billion euro austerity package, while Marine Le Pen is promising 125 billion euros in cuts over 5 years. Concerns over the debt crisis triggered heavy sell-offs in the bond market; the French-German yield spread climbed to its highest level since 2012. Experts warn that the problem could spread to the Eurozone.
