Jamie developed a table saw using LEGO pieces while looking for a use for his air-powered motors. The first version, made entirely from LEGO, could barely cut paper. The initial prototype was built with standard LEGO pieces to test the mechanism; the subsequent design used a real metal saw blade. The system runs on an air turbine that spins the blade. Jamie refined the 3D-printed geometry of the turbine blades through prototypes to efficiently convert high-pressure air into rotational motion. 3D-printed saw blades proved difficult because they lacked sharp edges. For safety, a dead man’s switch was added to cut off the airflow unless the user kept one hand pressed down. The automatic feed system that guides the board toward the blade, however, proved problematic and finicky. An air compressor and non-LEGO parts were used to create a functional setup.
Why it matters
The project shows that LEGO pieces can be used in mechanism development and experimentation, rather than forming a functional cutting tool on their own. In this respect, it offers a different design approach for people working on pressurized-air systems in a similar way and preparing low-cost prototypes. However, the introduction of a metal blade and non-LEGO parts makes the boundary between the setup and a toy construction more distinct; safe use becomes dependent not only on the added switch but also on the stability of the entire system. The automatic feed remaining problematic also leaves open the question of how dependent the cutting process still is on human intervention.
