It was decided that “Kurtlar Vadisi Pusu” would be subjected to an expert examination as part of the reopened investigation into the death of MIT official Kaşif Kozinoğlu at Silivri Prison on November 12, 2011. The prosecutor’s office announced that it would investigate allegations that the character “Kazım Kaşifoğlu” was portrayed as a traitor and killed, that vehicles with “FG” license plates appeared in the series, and that the series contained propaganda, covert messages, instructions or guidance in favor of FETÖ.
Kozinoğlu was referred to Silivri State Hospital after falling ill, and was found to have died upon arrival. Following an examination of camera footage, medical documents and statements, the investigation concluded with a decision not to prosecute on April 10, 2012. The Silivri Criminal Judgeship of Peace overturned the decision on August 26, 2026; a confidentiality order was issued and a special team was formed. Proceedings were initiated against 11 suspects who worked at the prison; 10 were detained, while the 1 suspect abroad was identified as a FETÖ fugitive. Of the suspects, 1 was arrested and 9 were released. In addition, a reporter, a cameraman and 7 healthcare workers were detained and referred to the courthouse.
Why it matters
The reopened case shows that the scope of the investigation has expanded significantly following the earlier decision not to prosecute, which was based on camera footage, medical documents and statements. The expert examination of the series means that the judicial authorities will investigate not only the circumstances of the death in prison, but also whether a connection can be established to the incident through fictional characters, license plates and possible coded messages. The inclusion of journalists and healthcare workers in the process, alongside prison officials, shows that the investigation has extended to various points of contact before and after the death. However, the detentions and arrests alone do not mean that the allegations have been substantiated. The central question that remains is whether a concrete and legally usable link can be established between the elements of the series and Kozinoğlu’s death.
