TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel announced that new technical capabilities and alternative methods would be deployed to locate those missing in the maritime disaster off Kyrenia. Üstel said that 5 missing people had been found in the operations so far, that the death toll stood at 13, that 15 people remained missing and that no additional missing person had been found today. He said teams were continuing their efforts from the air, at sea, underwater and on land, adding that experienced private organizations had inspected the area and the wreck and prepared a preliminary report. Üstel will meet with these organizations in Istanbul tomorrow to assess work on the wreck and ship salvage operations. After meeting with insurance company officials, Üstel will hold high-level talks in Ankara. He said the roadmap to be prepared would be shared with the families of the missing and the public, and that all available technical capacity would be used.
Why it matters
The fact that the search efforts will not be limited to the activities of the existing teams indicates that the technical, administrative and financial aspects of inspecting and salvaging the wreck will be addressed together. The preliminary report to be prepared by the private organizations will provide the basis for determining which methods will be used and how the operation will be conducted. The meetings in Istanbul, along with talks with insurance companies and contacts in Ankara, show that the process is not limited to the search at the scene; issues of responsibility, resources and coordination are also on the agenda. However, the conditions under which the 15 people still missing can be found and the wreck can be salvaged remain open questions. The roadmap to be presented to the families and the public will indicate how the next steps will take shape.
