While 238 people are discharged from the ship that sank off Kyrenia, 15 remain missing
Search vessel in the open sea

TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel announced that 238 of the 239 people rescued from the passenger ship named “Filo Jet,” which sank off the coast of Kyrenia on August 30, had been discharged, while the condition of the 1 person remaining in the hospital was improving. Üstel stated that there were no casualties in intensive care and reported that there had been a total of 267 passengers and crew members on board. He said that 13 people had lost their lives in the accident and that search efforts for the 15 missing people were continuing 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. All those rescued had been transferred to hospitals after the ship operating on the Kyrenia-Taşucu route took on water and sank shortly after departure. A total of 139 doctors and approximately 200 nurses and healthcare workers took part in the process. The wreck was reported to be located at a depth of 554 meters.

Why it matters

Although most of the rescue and treatment process has been completed, the inability to locate the missing people means that the humanitarian dimension of the incident continues. The uninterrupted continuation of the search efforts shows that the uncertainty has not yet ended for the victims’ relatives. The fact that the wreck is located at a depth of 554 meters indicates that the operations are being carried out in difficult conditions in terms of the sea and access. The improvement in the condition of the person remaining in the hospital and the absence of any casualties in intensive care show that the current situation has not worsened from a healthcare perspective, while the cause of the accident and how the sinking unfolded remain unanswered questions in the information available.
