Play PlayStation 2 and XBox 1 games on a jailbroken PS5
Game controller and optical discs

Projects aimed at running different systems on PlayStation 5 are being developed. PS5X2 is at the most advanced stage with its PCSX2-based PlayStation 2 emulator using Vulkan GPU acceleration; some games run at full speed in high resolution. XPSemu is at the Alpha 1 stage as an xemu-based Xbox emulator, and although its compatibility is limited, it can run Halo 2. No publicly available version of PP, Wine’s PS5 Proton version, exists yet. The emulators do not support running directly from original DVDs.

Why it matters

These efforts show that the PS5’s ability to run software outside its own gaming ecosystem is, at least at this stage, limited to jailbroken consoles and experimental projects. For users, this situation represents an area where the hardware’s emulation capabilities and software compatibility are being tested, rather than a way to access games from different platforms. Progress in PS2 emulation offers a more tangible use case, while the early stage of the Xbox side shows that getting a single game to run does not mean general compatibility. The lack of direct support for original DVDs also leaves open the question of how users with physical game collections can benefit from these projects. The Proton version not being publicly available currently makes it impossible to assess the scope of different PC software on the PS5.
